Moms, PTA, Schools and Union: Lessons from Won’t Back Down

Rosie Perez, Won't Back Down, UrbanWorld

Moms and teachers go together like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

We need each other and the only way to kick the bureaucracy to the curb is to become partners and #Occupy our schools for excellence.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure to attend the UrbanWorld Film Festival and screened Won’t Back Down starring Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rosie Perez, Lance Reddick, and Holly Hunter along with a strong supporting class. Continue reading

7 Ways You’re Hurting Your Daughter’s Future

Should Girls play with more than dolls?

I recently read this great article posted on the Mocha Moms discussion board and wanted to share.

The article is from Forbes magazine and talks about how as parents we may cripple our girls with thoughts as it relates to old-fashioned gender roles.

Someday you want your daughter, niece, goddaughter and best friend’s little girl to grow up and have the option of being a firewoman, a writer, an Olympic gold medalist in boxing, a sergeant, a celebrity chef, the president … or whatever else her little heart desires.

And you want her to get paid the exact same amount for the same work that her male colleagues do. Read more here.

Butterflies: God’s Grace and Love

Butterflies surrounded me all weekend

BNM,

This past Friday, I lost my Grandma Lurlene after having her in my life for 88 years – she was my best friend and first love.

God gave me ALL of her until she turned 84 and the Alzheimer’s took over and she became a shell of her once majestic presence.

Lurlene Garrick, my first love

I got that funny feeling on Friday that something was going to happen — got out of bed and saw her photo and the feeling became stronger, then the call came later in the day. Grandma went home to Jehovah. Continue reading

Michael Baisden's - "Do Women Know?"

Brand New Mommy,

Do you really know what you want in a relationship?

And, if you do know, have you communicated it with your partner?

Recently, the Brand New Mommy and Mocha Moms (Queens/LI chapter) put together a chat-n-chew at Sip This NY in Valley Stream to view and discuss Michael Baisden’s (popular syndicated radio show host) – “Do Women Know What They Want?” and the answers were quite AUTHENTIC.

Moms Briefing at White House: Leverage your Motherhood Skills

Queens/Long Island Mocha Moms at Dinner eve of briefing

Last Thursday, 150 Mocha Moms, from various chapters convened at the White House for a moms briefing with several high-ranking officials including Lisa Jackson, Administrator from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Kuae Mattox, National President of Mocha Moms

Lisa Jackson, Administrator, EPA

From the moment we entered the White House it was quite obvious the energy, passion and dedication for ‘change’ was in the air- from the interns to the top officials.

Lisa Jackson talked about how as mothers, we do not utilize our skills to negotiate, manage, maneuver and strategize as it relates to business. Jackson said, “You have skills that you can use to get the job, don’t be afraid to promote your motherhood skills when it comes to deal making and promoting your personal brand.” Continue reading

On my way to the White House

On my way to the White House!

I am so excited to attend the White House Briefing for Moms of color with my Mocha Moms on Thursday and a special tour of the East Wing on Friday. Thank you God for your favor.

I have no expectations for the meeting — everything will be divinely ordered and I will listen, absorb the knowledge and sit still for the sisterhood experience.

Get ready for an authentic blog post on my sojourn to Washington, DC for the Moms Briefing at the White House and making the Mocha Moms list.

Stay tuned …

Why Friends Change with Motherhood?

Finding a new circle

As I get older I sincerely believe the old adage that everything and everyone has a season and nothing underscores that more than motherhood and friendship.

Friendships change simply because your needs have changed – it’s not your fault, just life. Continue reading
