5 Tips to a Stress Free Holiday with Step-Families - 2009

Let’s face it – the traditional American family is no longer.

Just like peanut butter and jelly – America is a blended/stepfamily sandwich. The blended family has become the norm and sometimes when there is much un-channeled energy in a family it can lead to a drama-tic holiday.

A counseling degree from online

“ I Think We Have A Situation”

Gotta Love "The Situation"

My 10 year-old is having academic “situations.”

He is not focused, grades are on life support and he is on the verge of failing the first marking period. This is a real situation.

Sebastian is smart, talented and a little on the shy side, but, this new phase came out of no – where.

He loves to play, however, lately the frolicking has morphed into something “special.”  Let me say I know an intervention is needed.

Yes, each child may not be on the academic fast track, but I know when someone is not even trying to do his or her best. That’s what’s happening?

My son can take a part a computer and rebuild it in a matter of mere hours; operate any electronic gadget and assemble in two seconds –that’s his passion but school still must come first.

When his grades started to plummet my husband and I did Intervention 101 and took away some of his privileges. It didn’t faze him.

I knew something was up – but what? Here comes the Brand New Mommy CSI — cap and bag in hand it was time do some major sleuthing. Continue reading

Happy Birthday Ebony, 65 Never Looked So Good!

The Brand New Mommy included in the Parenting Section

I am so happy that we have an Ebony magazine celebrating 65 years. Yeah!!!

Ebony has been on the forefront of breaking news as it relates to the African Diasporapolitics, human rights, achievements, education, health/wellness, parenting, finance, and celebrities.

We  must salute the visionary mind of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson for understanding what was missing for Black America in 1945 and answering the call to educate and motivate many generations.

Now if we can only keep it Black owned and relevant in a microwave society.

Many times editors believe  all consumers want is stories on celebrities and more celebrities — not true.

We want real stories from P-E-O-P-L-E making a difference sprinkled with some celeb features.

For the Black media to stay relevant they must answer the call of reporting “news” and featuring human interest stories not on the radar of their competitors. Feel me?

With that being said, I am elated to say that The Brand New Mommy is included in the Collector’s Issue (on stands now)  in the Parenting section offering advice on raising a blended family. We are appreciative to all the media and support.

Happy Birthday Ebony!
