By definition a baby mama is a woman who has multiple children out of wedlock and her respective economic status falls in the low-income category.
If we go by definition that would probably include many folks – but by mainstream media standards it is generally reserved for the darker hued sisters.
Has the baby mama labeling gone mad?
It seems the media quickly labels most high profile Black single mothers as baby mamas (Lauryn Hill, Savannah Brinson, and Shar Jackson to name a few) but reserves the labeling of “mother” for the “other” baby mamas like Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Jamie Lynn Spears (Britney’s sister) and Bristol Palin (Sarah’s daughter).
If a woman decides to have a child out of wedlock and has the means to take care of her child should she still be called a baby mama?
I mean what’s the difference between Angelina Jolie, Lauryn Hill and Jamie Lynn Spears?
Is it simply race since they are not married, however, all have the means to take care of their children?
Do you think the baby mama labeling is about race and class?
Disclaimer: I think most baby mamas would rather be married if given the opportunity.
