Giving Gratitude: Baby Steps Count!

There are times when you have to simply give thanks and remember all the work you have put in and give gratitude.

I was watching this video created by Pam Perry and had to get on my knees and give praise just for living my dream and having the opportunity to take baby steps.

The home run is coming … thank you, thank you!

Happy Sunday!

Moms, PTA, Schools and Union: Lessons from Won’t Back Down

Rosie Perez, Won't Back Down, UrbanWorld

Moms and teachers go together like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

We need each other and the only way to kick the bureaucracy to the curb is to become partners and #Occupy our schools for excellence.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure to attend the UrbanWorld Film Festival and screened Won’t Back Down starring Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rosie Perez, Lance Reddick, and Holly Hunter along with a strong supporting class. Continue reading

‘Brand’ New Mommy Hot List

Mommas,

Get ready to take your “brand” to the next level and renew you mind, body and soul.

I am loving the following…

(1) Vacation & Business co-mingling is the absolute best. I recently visited St.Lucia for a speaking engagement and had a fantastic time. I enjoyed a beautiful lunch at Jade Mountain (AAA Five Diamond Rating).

(2) The best hair products for the hazy summer days (this is what I am lovin’ this week)

(3) Bikram Yoga. The best way to relax and get in the mental zone for 90 minutes. Bikram does wonders for the body if you can commit to heat.

(4 ) Bottle of vino. I am loving Sebeka wines from South Africa.

(5) A great book. I’m reading – Facing Your Giants by Max Lucado

Viola Davis: No More Apologizing for My Skin and Hair

The business of hair is lucrative; creating and selling products to Black women is BEYOND lucrative.

As a black woman I have a love affair with my hair. You?

Sadly, there are moments when I love it natural and then moments when I scream for creamy crack. At the end of the day, is it just hair or does it define me?

Yesterday I was watching the cast of ‘Won’t Back Down’ on Anderson Cooper and Viola Davis said it authentically:

Viola on Why She Stopped Wearing Wigs
Viola Davis told Anderson, “I took off my wig because I wanted to step into who I was. I felt like every time I put on a wig I was apologizing for being a dark-skinned woman with curly hair, like I was hiding it.”

What are your thoughts on hair as you reinvent ‘brand’ mom?

Baby Mama: Class, Color … Or Both?

Lebron James and Savannah Brinson (photo courtesy of playerwives.com)

By definition a baby mama is a woman who has multiple children out of wedlock and her respective economic status falls in the low-income category.

If we go by definition that would probably include many folks – but by mainstream media standards it is generally reserved for the darker hued sisters.

Has the baby mama labeling gone mad?

It seems the media quickly labels most high profile Black single mothers as baby mamas (Lauryn Hill, Savannah Brinson, and Shar Jackson to name a few) but reserves the labeling of “mother” for the “other” baby mamas like Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Jamie Lynn Spears (Britney’s sister) and Bristol Palin (Sarah’s daughter).

If a woman decides to have a child out of wedlock and has the means to take care of her child should she still be called a baby mama?

I mean what’s the difference between Angelina Jolie, Lauryn Hill and Jamie Lynn Spears?

Is it simply race since they are not married, however, all have the means to take care of their children?

Do you think the baby mama labeling is about race and class?

Disclaimer: I think most baby mamas would rather be married if given the opportunity.

Brand Dad: What Women Should Know About Men and Games

Men and Games/ photo chrisflett.com

Video games have been a constant in my life since 1983.

Gaming has always been a great stress releaser and just plain fun. I can lose myself for hours in all sorts of worlds but throughout it all I am fully aware that it is entertainment and in no way reality. At 45, so many folks of my generation look at video games as a kids’ activity even though we all grew up with it but particularly women. A good majority of women feel that as an adult man playing games, it somehow shows a lack of maturity, responsibility and direction. Continue reading

So Conflicted with R. Kelly: The Man & The Talent

I try my best to separate the art from from the craziness with artist, R. Kelly.

My oh my … he is so talented and last night I watched his latest video, “Feeling Single,” and the music just brought joy to my body with the lightness of the song. BNM, do you like the song?

I have to admit in full disclosure that I like R. Kelly’s music. Should I feel ashamed as a mom of a young girl?

The most important thing all mothers should know about pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is that they are at risk for this common pelvic floor disorder. Sister Girls: Celebrate & Love the Magic

A true girlfriend is a rare gem and if you are blessed – you will have a few really really good ones. Let’s face it, not all girlfriends are good … like not all Black folks are Black.

12 years ago, I met Aisha, Syreeta and Jill through work and we slowly became friends.

When I first met them it was my intention not to become too close since we were all working together (why do we do that?) and did not want to co-mingle work and friendship.

I was successful for two years keeping them in a “box” and then we went on a retreat together in the deep woods of West Virginia and I allowed my wall to collapse. Continue reading

Usher: Was He Telling the Truth?

Usher on Own

Happy Monday, BNM!

Wow. Let’s talk about how Oprah’s OWN really owned all the emotions and drama this past Sunday.

What did you think about Usher’s interview? Do you think it was authentic or a lot of pause to carefully craft a PR statement?

I’m not certain about the interview yet, need to watch closely (again) and see body language.

All I can say is that the marriage was doomed before it had a chance.

Let’s pray for the children because we should never have to fight to love our babies.

What did you think of the interview?

Why Usher Called Off His Wedding

Usher’s relationship with his now ex-wife, Tameka Foster Raymond, played out in the tabloids for years. In the summer of 2007, the couple made headlines when they called off their lavish Hamptons wedding hours before the ceremony. A week later, they exchanged vows in the office of Usher’s attorney. Watch as Usher tells Oprah why he had second thoughts about their marriage.
