Mommy Time: Keeping it Fresh with Rollerskating

I like you, am a proud ‘Brand’ New Mommy.  I’m a wife and mother to three children, two boys and one girl.  I work a full time job five days a week.  I’m a Mocha Mom (www.mochamoms.org) and a LadyDove (http://ladydoves.org); both organizations are not-for-profit organizations that empower their members while giving back to their community.  During the week I’m “football mom,” “swim mom,” “track mom” and “can I come over your house and play mom?”

I love to write and blog on various topics that can be read @ http://nomoreknownow.blogspot.com.

To me there’s nothing special about the things I do, after all other moms are doing the same things.  How we do it, I don’t know.  It’s just something we do.  What I do know is that there needs to be a balance of those things that you do for everyone else and those things that you do for yourself.

But, when it’s time to do me, I get my skates (old school quads, not inline) throw them in my bag, get in my car and head out to whatever rink/ skate club is hot for that night.

When I tell most people this they seem surprised that people still roller skate like that; and then I have to inform them that although many skating rinks have closed there are still a few left and they have adult nights that are off the hook.  The music is all of that and usually the rinks are packed.  First Thursday’s at Branch Brook Park is so packed that I usually tell people don’t even consider going unless you really know how to skate.  When I’m on the floor in my skates and the music flows through the speakers penetrating my body every thought and to do list escapes me.

No cares in the world at that particular moment.  It’s just me, my skates and the floor; skating with the flow gradually building up a good sweat to old school classics and house music like, “Roll Bounce,” “Just Us,” “Gonna Have a Funky Good Time,” “Break For Love,” “Gorilla Rhymes” and “What is Black Music” until the slow jams come on.  At this point and time my husband usually skates over grabs me by my waist spins me around pulling me towards his chest holding me tight, skating backwards as I close my eyes while Freddie Jackson and my husband sings “You are My Lady.” We skate together like that until the music changes tempo and the DJ spins some new school joints.  My husband than pushes me away and we skate doubles enjoying each others company until it’s time to go.

Rollerskating is so much fun.  It’s a great total body work out and an opportunity for my husband and I to get out, really appreciate each other and get lost in an era not to far gone.

Hope to see you on the floor real soon.

  1. I love it Khadija. You have it going on, on those skates. I love it when a Brand New Mommy defines her own happiness.
